SUMMARY:The Heart of It All — Impact of Obesity on Cardiometabolic Health Congressional Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Obesity is a complex\, chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence and affecting about 42.4% of U.S. adults. As a leading cause of preventable death\, obesity is also a major driver of healthcare costs.  \nFortunately\, our understanding of obesity has increased tremendously over the past decade. We now know that obesity is a multifactorial disease where genetics\, environment\, and behavior influence a person’s likelihood of developing obesity. We now have effective therapies to manage obesity and its comorbid conditions\, yet one of the main barriers is access to care. \nObesity is the greatest contributor to the burden of chronic diseases accounting for 47.1% of the total healthcare costs nationwide\, or $1.72 trillion dollars in the US\, based on the most current data available (2016). Effective treatment can improve health outcomes and yield substantial savings for the nation’s healthcare system. \nJoin us to hear from experts about opportunities for intervention. Without effective management\, the associated medical costs for obesity-related conditions including  heart disease\, hypertension\, elevated lipids\, diabetes\, sleep apnea\, orthopedic conditions\, and some cancers\, will continue to rise.

SUMMARY:Congressional Briefing: Preventing HPV-Related Cancers Through Vaccination and Screening
DESCRIPTION:Cancers caused by human papillomavirus (HPV)\, cervical\, throat\, head\, neck\, anal\, penile and vaginal\, remain a significant public health problem in the United States. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide and an estimated 4\,300 deaths from cervical cancer will occur in 2023 in the U.S. In addition to essential screening and early treatment\, there is fortunately an HPV vaccine that protects against the types of HPV that cause most cervical and other HPV-associated cancers. It is a major advancement for all\, since it offers primary prevention against the infectious agent that is the main cause. Data demonstrates that HPV vaccination could prevent more than 90% of HPV-caused cancers. Despite the demonstrated success of the HPV vaccine\, vaccination along with screening rates still fall below national targets\, and only worsened during the pandemic. Join us to learn how the HPV vaccine\, screening and early treatment is a powerful tool to help end several cancers and actions that can be taken by Congress to help achieve increased uptake of these modalities throughout the nation. \nSpeakers: \n\nRep. SUMMARY:Governor DeWine Event in Columbus
DESCRIPTION:Governor Mike DeWine will talk with Jo Ingles\, of the Statehouse News Bureau\, to follow-up on his State of the State address. He gave his fourth annual State of the State address last week\, the third consecutive year since the pandemic cancelled his address in 2020 and 2021. While always a champion for children’s issues\, this year Governor DeWine made this the prime focus. Some highlights include:   \n\nSchool-based clinics for mental health support for students – Emphasized the Student Wellness and Success Funds and the new Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative to serve 375\,000 residents and at least 61\,000 students\nBehavioral health workforce – Addressed how the demand for behavioral health services has increased twice as fast as the current workforce\, needing 4\,700 new counselors\, 4\,300 new social workers\, 4\,500 new chemical dependency professionals\, and a substantial number of psychiatrists to meet the growing demands.\nThe Comprehensive Maternal Care (CMC) program – Focused on the need to identify where more practitioners can meet the needs of the state where half of all births are covered by Medicaid and expand on the Ohio Department of Medicaid’s current work with 138 Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) practices across Ohio covering over 35\,000 Ohio mothers.\nOutcomes Acceleration for Kids (OAK) – Announced a new program to illustrate that Medicaid-managed care is shifting its focus to positive health outcomes instead of the business of care.\nOhioRISE – Described how some children in Ohio have extremely complex behavioral health care needs and how this program will continue to connect families and children with the most complicated care to providers\, serving an additional 14\,000 families since the last State of the State address. There are over 11\,000 children getting intensive care\, and over 32\,000 children enrolled in the program.\nFamily Connects pilot program to launch in 11 counties – Shared information on his new home visiting program called Family Connects that will happen in 11 counties across the state and enable every new birthing parent to be eligible for home visits from a nurse beginning three weeks after the baby’s birth. This aims to reduce infant mortality and address postpartum depression.\nChildcare expansion – Governor DeWine highlighted two different strategies focused on advancing affordability of childcare and building capacity of childcare providers with the creation of the Childcare Choice Voucher Program. It will be available to families with incomes of up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and an estimated additional 8\,000 families will benefit from it. Once a family is approved\, the voucher will help cover the cost of tuition for 12 months. Payments will be determined by the child’s age and the type of childcare\, with families’ copayments being set at 9%. He also outlined an $85 million Childcare Access Grants program for providers to increase capacity through new or existing programs\, complete repairs\, or to provide additional support to staff and families to support children with special needs.\nWorkforce development and marijuana – Discussed the recently passed statute that legalizes marijuana in Ohio and asked the legislature to further regulate the use of marijuana to limit smoking in public spaces. He expressed concern about the use of intoxicating hemp\, commonly referred to as Delta-8\, and asked that the legislature restrict the sale of these products to youth.

With the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research kickstarting conversations\, collaborations and change followed by the first-ever $100 million investment in women’s health innovation by ARPA-H and the over 20 directives resulting from President Biden’s Executive Order\, government has made women’s health a priority. \nThe time for change has never been clearer with many persistent gaps spanning from maternal health where Black women are 3X more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women and the U.S. ranks among the worst internationally with growing OB-GYN deserts across the country to autoimmune conditions where women make up 80% of patients and Alzheimer’s where women are 66% of patients yet little is known as to why these sex differences exist. Among cancers\, 50% of those diagnosed with ovarian cancer die yet no early diagnostic tool or effective treatment is available. Non-smoking related lung cancers have risen 84% in women while dropping 36% among men over the past 42 years\, yet no data exists to explain why. Menopause impacts 100% of women reaching those mid-life years yet stigma and lack of research funding have forced most women to suffer with painful symptoms in silence. Menopause triggers sudden increased prevalence of many conditions (from heart disease to cardiometabolic syndrome to autoimmune conditions) that impact the affected woman’s work\, family\, and community. \nWomen live five years longer than men on average but often do not thrive throughout their lives. This can change by prioritizing the health of women in research funding\, investment strategies\, clinical trial design\, how care is provided with meaningful access\, FDA approval and CMS reimbursement policies\, and much more.  \nJoin this special Women’s Health Forum to learn about the changing landscape in women’s health\, investment in research and innovation\, clinical trial design and recruitment to ensure participation that is representative of disease impact in the broader population\, and patient-centric care models that are shifting the paradigm in how we treat women.
