SUMMARY:Congressional Briefing: Focused Ultrasound
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. \nFocused ultrasound is a non-invasive therapeutic technology with the potential to improve the lives of millions of patients with a variety of serious medical disorders. It offers a non-pharmacological alternative or complement to surgery\, radiation therapy\, and drug-based treatments. Focused ultrasound treats tissue with multiple intersecting beams of sound\, which can be focused precisely on targets deep in the body without damaging surrounding structures. \nJoin us to learn about this revolutionary platform technology\, which has transformed care for patients suffering from serious conditions like Parkinson’s disease\, essential tremor\, prostate cancer\, and uterine fibroids\, and is currently being explored for more than 180 other indications. You will hear from experts and patients about focused ultrasound’s potential to increase the quality and longevity of life and decrease the cost of care by transforming the treatment of a broad range of indications. Speakers will also cover different ways focused ultrasound can be used to treat the brain\, including tissue destruction\, blood-brain barrier opening for enhanced drug delivery\, and neuromodulation. \nSpeakers: \n\nJessica Foley\, PhD – Chief Scientific Officer and Managing Director of Government Affairs\, Focused Ultrasound Foundation\nTerri Freson – Focused Ultrasound Patient – Chronic Pain\nRoger Packer\, M.D. – Director\, Gilbert Family Neurofibromatosis Institute and Director\, Brain Tumor Institute of Children’s National Hospital\nNoah S. SUMMARY:Congressional Briefing: Preventing HPV-Related Cancers Through Vaccination and Screening
DESCRIPTION:Cancers caused by human papillomavirus (HPV)\, cervical\, throat\, head\, neck\, anal\, penile and vaginal\, remain a significant public health problem in the United States. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide and an estimated 4\,300 deaths from cervical cancer will occur in 2023 in the U.S. In addition to essential screening and early treatment\, there is fortunately an HPV vaccine that protects against the types of HPV that cause most cervical and other HPV-associated cancers. It is a major advancement for all\, since it offers primary prevention against the infectious agent that is the main cause. Data demonstrates that HPV vaccination could prevent more than 90% of HPV-caused cancers. Despite the demonstrated success of the HPV vaccine\, vaccination along with screening rates still fall below national targets\, and only worsened during the pandemic. Join us to learn how the HPV vaccine\, screening and early treatment is a powerful tool to help end several cancers and actions that can be taken by Congress to help achieve increased uptake of these modalities throughout the nation. \nSpeakers: \n\nRep. SUMMARY:The Heart of It All — Impact of Obesity on Cardiometabolic Health Congressional Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Obesity is a complex\, chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence and affecting about 42.4% of U.S. adults. As a leading cause of preventable death\, obesity is also a major driver of healthcare costs.  \nFortunately\, our understanding of obesity has increased tremendously over the past decade. We now know that obesity is a multifactorial disease where genetics\, environment\, and behavior influence a person’s likelihood of developing obesity. We now have effective therapies to manage obesity and its comorbid conditions\, yet one of the main barriers is access to care. \nObesity is the greatest contributor to the burden of chronic diseases accounting for 47.1% of the total healthcare costs nationwide\, or $1.72 trillion dollars in the US\, based on the most current data available (2016). Effective treatment can improve health outcomes and yield substantial savings for the nation’s healthcare system. \nJoin us to hear from experts about opportunities for intervention. Without effective management\, the associated medical costs for obesity-related conditions including  heart disease\, hypertension\, elevated lipids\, diabetes\, sleep apnea\, orthopedic conditions\, and some cancers\, will continue to rise.

SUMMARY:Busting Breast Cancer Myths to Save Lives Congressional Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Breast Cancer Ruckus. \nJoin experts in breast cancer diagnostics who will explain the current imaging technologies and the importance of a woman’s breast tissue type in obtaining the most accurate screening. While knowing one’s genetics is helpful so is understanding one’s breast density — it can be vital in early detection that can save lives. Without this knowledge and access to the right imaging technology\, the ability to find tumors in dense breasts can be like looking for a snowball in a snow storm. Impossible to find! This briefing will educate on breast imaging and early detection as well as on insurance coverage challenges for supplemental imaging technology for patients. \nBreast Cancer Facts: \n\n1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.\nAn estimated 43\,700 women in the US will die of breast cancer this year.\nBreast cancer is almost 100% survivable if caught early\, but if caught late\, a woman has only a 25% 5-year survival rate.\nMammography misses up to 50% of breast cancers in women with dense breasts\, meaning almost 300\,000 women annually will be incorrectly told that they don’t have breast cancer\, when they do.\nWomen with dense breasts are at higher risk for breast cancer and cancer mortality.\n\n71% of breast cancer occurs in dense breasts\nHaving dense breasts is a bigger risk factor than family history.\n\n\nMore cancers are missed in women with dense breasts\, who tend to be younger (30-60 years old)\, Black\, Latina\, or Asian.\nImaging technologies exist to detect cancer in dense breasts but are often unavailable because insurance will not cover it\, and out-of-pocket costs can be significant.\nLack of insurance coverage makes physicians reluctant to offer patients these imaging technologies as options.\nProviding access to women to the right supplemental screening tool for their breast type can enable the earlier detection of breast cancer.

SUMMARY:Congressional Briefing on Lead Hazards in the Home
DESCRIPTION:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 500\,000 children in the United States have blood lead levels at or above its reference value of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter. Even at very low levels\, lead exposure affects the brain’s ability to control impulses and process information. Lead-poisoned children are more likely to struggle in school\, drop out\, be incarcerated as adults\, and by the age of 23 require social and/or homeless services. \nIt is critical to reduce sources of exposure before a child is harmed. Decades of research have led to practical and effective solutions; the remaining challenge is to implement the solutions at scale. Learn about the important work that has happened over the past few decades to address lead exposure\, the holes that continue to exist in making homes lead safe\, and solutions to address these gaps. \nModerator: \n\nArturo Garcia-Costas – Senior Program Officer\, The New York Community Trust\n\nSpeakers: \n\nAlison McShane – Parent Advocate\, Detroit Lead Advocacy (DLEAD)\nMorri Markowitz\, MD – Director of Lead Poisoning Prevention and Treatment Program & Professor of Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore\nMatt Ammon – Director\, Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes\, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development\nRebecca Morley – Consultant\, Lead Funders Action Network\nOceanna Fair – Southside Branch Leader\, Families for Lead Freedom Now
