SUMMARY:Effective Drug Treatment Requires Engagement: Addressing the Opioid Crisis
DESCRIPTION:During the COVID pandemic\, drug overdose deaths rose by almost 30% in the U.S. — the highest number ever recorded\, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We are in the midst of a “fourth wave” of high mortality involving methamphetamine and cocaine use in the United States. This stimulant-related escalation in overdose deaths demands an effective long-term approach. With no FDA-approved medication for Stimulant Use Disorder\, the best solution is Contingency Management. \nBackground:\nThe single best-evidenced approach with the largest effect size and greatest cost-effectiveness is Contingency Management (CM). CM is a reward system that works.\nIt provides tangible incentives (e.g.\, modest monetary rewards) in progressively increasing amounts for objectively determined health behaviors such as abstinence (confirmed by substance use tests and treatment attendance. In over 100 peer-reviewed scientific reports\, CM boosts drug abstinence rates TWICE that of usual care. Studies demonstrate the long-term efficacy of CM\, vital to successful recovery from drug abuse and addiction\, saving millions of dollars in Medicaid\, CHIP and private insurance and enabling people to hold onto their jobs and make contributions to society and the economy. \nOpportunity:\nWith the White House stating that addressing the nation’s stimulant epidemic with contingency management and remote technology solutions is a Year One Priority\, states must understand how to use it in their communities. Learn how at this briefing! \nExperts Will Explain: \n\nWhat is different about this fourth wave of the drug epidemic?\nWhat is Contingency Management?\nWhy is Contingency Management the only effective treatment for this wave of the epidemic?\nWhat can states do to implement Contingency Management practices?\n\nModerator: \nKatie Collins | Former Program Director of the Biden Cancer Initiative and Special Assistant to the Director of the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force\n‍ \nSpeakers: \n\n‍‍Former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy | Lead sponsor of the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act\nDr. H. Westley Clark\, MD\, JD\, MPH | Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara California; Former Director of the Center for\nSubstance Abuse Treatment\, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration\, U.S. Department of Health and Human Service\nDr. Garrett E. Moran\, PhD | Associate Director of Services and Policy Innovation\, Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute; Professor\, Health Policy\, Leadership\, and\nManagement\, School of Public Health; Professor\, Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry\, School of Medicine\nDr. Shawn A. SUMMARY:Cancer Advocacy Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this event is for advocates and those impacted with cancer to dial in to learn about cancer advocacy efforts\, how to be an effective advocate\, promote key legislation\, build grassroots community and support for advocates new to the process. We aim to build a long-term cancer advocacy support system and efficacy and would be honored to have you join us. \nIf you missed the first discussion\, please see a recap of the November 30th conversation here\, as well as the SHEPHERD Advocacy Toolkit and a summary of the Cancer Patient Equity Act: \n\nCancer Advocacy webinar video: https://youtu.be/RnciAjfyUEI\n\n\nCancer Advocacy Toolkit: https://www.rarecancertoolkit.com\n\n‍ \nH.R. 5377\, Cancer Patient Equity Act of 2021 — Rep. Butterfield (D-NC) and Rep. Bilirakis (R-FL) \nMolecular Diagnostics: Mandates coverage for molecular diagnostics at the time of diagnosis for patients on Medicare\, Medicaid and CHIP. \n\nMolecular diagnostics are a critical component of providing accurate diagnoses and enabling the use of next-generation targeted therapies.\nThat information is especially important for cancers without modern standards of care\, where clinical trials and targeted therapies may provide more hope for an improved outcome than typical chemotherapy and radiation regimens.\n\nEducation and Awareness: Coordinates an education and awareness program on genetic testing. \n\nThis bill will create an education and awareness programs in coordination with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute for physicians and the general public on what genomic testing is\, how it is used\, and the role of genetic counselors.\nIt will also encourage the inclusion of the importance of molecular diagnostics at diagnosis and reoccurrence of cancer during graduate medical and continuing medical education.
